But while many mobile workstations are hulking, expensive beasts, the revamped HP ZBook Firefly 14 G7 (starts at $1,806; $2,391 as tested) is not. It's an ultraportable laptop with a gorgeous 14-inch display and components powerful enough to just barely classify it as a workstation. If your software requirements extend to light workflows on specialized apps like SolidWorks, the Firefly will get the job done in style and for a lot less money than heftier flagship systems. It claims our latest Editors' Choice award for entry-level mobile workstations. HP started naming some of its lightweight business laptops after insects with the Elite Dragonfly last year, and the ZBook Firefly lives up to the tradition. The laptop measures 0.71 by 12.73 by 8.45 inches (HWD) and weighs just 2.96 pounds—dimensions that, given its 14-inch display, unequivocally qualify it as an ultraportable . Lenovo's thinnest and lightest workstation, the ThinkPad P1 , weighs 4 pounds and measures 0.7 by 14.2 by 5.8 inches, though it does have a larger 15-inch screen. The HP ZBook Firefly 14 G7 is a lovely workstation that stands out for a number of reasons. It’s the world’s smallest and lightest 14-inch mobile workstation for starters. Next, it’s equipped with a brilliant 4K display and a great pair of speakers. Plus, you’ve got a powerful 10th Gen Intel Core i7 processor and an Nvidia Quadro GPU. However, the $2,599 price and the subpar battery life might give some mobile professionals pause. The HP ZBook Firefly 14 G7 I reviewed costs $2,599 and is decked out with a 1.1-GHz Intel Core i7-10810U vPro CPU, 32GB of RAM, a 512GB PCIe NVMe TLC SSD, an Nvidia Quadro P520 GPU and a 14-inch, 4K display. The base model is priced at $1,299 and has a 1.6-GHz Intel Core i5-10210U CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 128GB M.2 SATA-3 SSD, Intel UHD Graphics, and a 14-inch, 1080p display. The ZBook Firefly can be configured with a number of different specs including processors, RAM, and storage. However, every component will greatly affect the final price. For an extra $254, you can upgrade the display from a 250-nit panel to a 1,000-nit screen. You can even remove the webcam entirely, although this would only save you $16, so it’s probably not worth it. As soon as I took the Firefly 14 G7 out of the box, I was mesmerized by its gorgeous, minimalistic design and its all-aluminum chassis. The lid possesses a shiny dark gray exterior with a reflective Z placed smack in the middle. If you hold up the laptop and stare directly into this ZBook logo, you can see a perfect reflection of your face. Opening the lid reveals a gorgeous continuation of the dark gray aesthetic, accentuated by a minimalist palm rest that feels satisfying to touch.

HP gave us something that nobody thought possible: an ultraportable workstation laptop, courtesy of HP’s ZBook lineup. While some of the higher-end ZBooks have some monstrously powerful hardware, this entry-level ZBook Firefly 14 G7 proves why the “workstation you can take everywhere” dream has been so elusive. Exceptional build quality and ergonomics Exceptional build quality and ergonomics The model we tested is hardly lacking for power: it’s the top-spec Firefly 14 G7 with 32GB of RAM, an Intel Core i7 vPro CPU, and a 4K display. It’s a bit oxymoronic to test the top-line entry-level machine, but in this case ZBook’s entry-level machine is also marketed as its smallest machine. We wanted to know exactly what it could do. What the Firefly 14 G7 attempts to accomplish is admirable: pack a 3D modelling machine into a 3-pound, 14-inch chassis you can take with you wherever you go. However, it falls short of its promises: the Nvidia Quadro P520 GPU it comes with is a serious hamper to its performance, with graphical prowess so meager that it couldn’t even best AMD Ryzen’s integrated GPUs. While the Firefly’s chassis allows for easy access to the RAM and SSD slots for upgradeability down the line, all the RAM in the world can’t make up for a lousy processor. There's no denying that the ZBook Firefly 14 G7 is a masterclass in aesthetics. When HP set about redefining their ZBook brand of laptops, they sought to make professional-grade PCs that could appeal to everyday consumers. The Firefly 14 G7 sits at the bottom of this lineup, starting at about $1,250 on promotion for a model with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage. Because this is technically a workstation laptop, however, you can configure it with up to 32 GB of RAM (like our review model), an Intel Core i7 processor, and Nvidia Quadro graphics.
