The Latitude 7420 is a solid and simple business device, without decorative extras, but with numerous security functions and options.
As the direct successor to the Latitude 7410 model from 2020, the Latitude 7420 from 2022 brings with it a variety of changes both inside and out. Only the chassis design remains the same, apart from the color scheme and texture. Dell's hardware offering includes a wide range of 7420 models in clamshell and 2-in-1 designs, with prices ranging from €1,275 to €2,950. The models are available with eighth-generation Intel Tiger Lake U processors, vPro options, hard-soldered 8GB or 16GB RAM and M.2 PCIe SSDs. The options for a Touchscreen and 4K resolution have been carried over, while the FHD-Touchscreen is only available in the 2-in-1 system. These different variants can now be purchased from us at a fraction of the price. Our test model is an average member of the series with a Core i5-1145G7 processor and a 512 GB SSD. The casing design remains true to its predecessor, but the appearance, texture and arrangement of the ports have been fundamentally changed. Most noticeable is the rubberized surface on the lid and throughout the interior. Even the lacquered carbon fiber base plate has a matte finish, although the same coating has not been used. Hands rest securely on these surfaces and fingerprints go unnoticed. The device weighs 1.3 kg and seems secure when used or carried In terms of stability, the casing leaves nothing to be desired: It doesn't twist or squeak, and the hinges keep the lid tight, although they become even tighter when the laptop is open more than 90 degrees. There is no shaking or wobbling during transportation. Weighing in at 1.3 kg, this 14-inch laptop is not one of the lightest models, but it's not the heaviest either. Compared to its predecessor, the 7410 model, which weighed 1.4 kg, Dell has reduced the weight here by 100 grams. However, this reduction does not affect the stability. On the left side of the notebook, the HDMI ports and two Thunderbolt ports have disappeared from our field of vision.

Only the case design remains the same except for the color scheme and texture. It is an upper mid-range business subnotebook that sits between the smaller Latitude 5000 series and the flagship Latitude 9000 series. Dell's hardware offering includes a wide range of 7420 clamshell and 2-in-1 SKUs from 1,275 to 2,950 Euros with 11th-generation Intel Tiger Lake U CPUs and the options of vPro, 8GB or 16GB permanently soldered RAM, and M.2 PCIe SSDs. The touchscreen and 4K option of the predecessor are omitted, while the FHD touchscreen is only available in the 2-in-1 system. Our specific test model is a mid-range SKU with Core i5-1145G7 CPU and 512 GB SSD for around 1,400 Euros. The Latitude 7420's direct competitors include other high-end business subnotebooks such as the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G9 , ThinkPad T14s , the HP EliteBook 840 Aero , and - as dGPU models - the affordable MSI Modern 14 and the ThinkPad T14 Gen2 . Other Dell Latitude models in review: Dell Latitude 14 5420 Dell Latitude 5320 The design of the case remains true to its predecessor, but the look, feel, and structure of the ports have been fundamentally changed. Most noticeable is the rubberized finish on the lid and the entire interior. Even the varnished carbon fiber baseplate feels duller than mere varnish, although the same coating is not used here. The skin rests non-slip and securely on these surfaces, fingerprints remain unnoticeable, and the 1.3 kg device feels secure when used or carried. In terms of stability, the case leaves nothing to be desired: it doesn't twist, it doesn't creak, and the hinges keep the lid taut, although these become even tighter when the laptop is opened up more than 90 degrees. Nothing jiggles or wobbles when carried around. The 1.3 kilogram 14-incher isn't one of the lightest models - but not the heaviest either.

This 14-inch business laptop gets subtle improvements with each new generation. The latest version doesn't fix what isn't broken, adding Intel's latest silicon and little else. This means that for the time being, it's a superior alternative to our longtime favorite enterprise ultraportable , the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (whose new Gen 9 edition, which matches the Dell's move to 11th Generation Intel processors, we haven't tested yet). Choose the Latitude 7420 if you want a competent workhorse with excellent computing performance, even if it is a bit heavier and more expensive than the ThinkPad. The Latitude 7000 series was Dell's flagship until the introduction of the Latitude 9000 series a few years ago. Both are available in a range of screen sizes and form factors to fulfill pretty much any business computing need, as long as the business in question has deep pockets. The Latitude 7420 is available in either the conventional clamshell seen here or a 2-in-1 convertible version that offers more physical flexibility. Both have similar configuration options and are roughly the same size and weight. Our 7420 review unit, clad in an attractive black carbon fiber finish, measures 0.68 by 12.7 by 8.2 inches and weighs 2.7 pounds. Those are impressive dimensions for the category, though the class-leading ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 is a bit trimmer (0.
