With the HP Victus 16, the combination of Geforce RTX 4070 and the FHD display in particular ensures high frame rates in almost every title and every setting, meaning it’s a very good price-performance ratio when it comes to gaming. $1099.99 baseline | $1799.99 as reviewed When it comes to decently equipped gaming laptops, the price normally hovers around $1,300 to $2,000. Usually, these models have a GeForce RTX 4060 on board. Well, this configurable version of the HP Victus 16 for $1,799 comes with an RTX 4070 and promises better gaming performance in this price range. HP also combines the GPU with a powerful AMD processor. The 16-inch laptop sits in a sturdy black plastic case. Its RTX 4070 has a TGP of 120 watts, less than the top model of this GPU, which is allowed to draw up to 140 watts in total. With 4,608 shaders, 36 ray tracing cores, and 144 tensor cores, however, it’s better equipped than the RTX 4060. The graphics memory is 8GB in both variants. Like all GeForce 40-series GPUs, the RTX 4070 also supports DLSS 3 with Frame Generation. The processor is also striking in the Victus 16. HP uses a current Ryzen 7 7840HS. This Phoenix CPU uses eight Zen 4 cores with SMT while other notebooks in the price range of the HP Victus 16 with an AMD CPU usually use the 7735HS. This Rembrandt refresh has eight cores of the predecessor architecture Zen3+. We performed all tests in “Performance” mode. That’s a shame, as the laptop’s AMD Ryzen 7 processor and mobile Nvidia RTX 4060 graphics card deliver excellent game performance for a mid-range machine. It certainly serves up ample frames per dollar, but comparably priced alternatives like the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 aren’t far behind and avoid the missteps that hold the Victus 16 back. The HP Victus 16 is sold in multiple configurations , and navigating them is a bit of a mess. All 2023 Victus 16 laptops use Nvidia RTX GPUs, but some variants swap the AMD Ryzen processor for Intel’s 13th-gen CPUs (the 2024 models go up to 14th-gen). HP also sells a customizable AMD Ryzen configuration that offers several upgrades over the laptop we reviewed, including a model with a 2560 x 1440, 240Hz display, up to 32GB of RAM, and two more distinctive colorways (ceramic white and performance blue). It's a pretty restrained all-black laptop, made to fit in rather than stand out. Since gaming rigs in this price range are likely to be your only system—also taken to class or to a café—blending in with the scenery is a fine choice. HP's Victus supports a portable lifestyle as well, measuring 0.94 by 14.5 by 10.2 inches (HWD) and weighing 5.15 pounds. That's fairly svelte and reasonably light for a 16-inch gaming notebook. Despite being plastic instead of aluminum, the laptop's physical build feels sturdy. We recently looked at the HP Omen 16 (2023) , which used the same plastic chassis for a $2,800 configuration as an entry-level model. However, while HP's Victus design and materials aren't exactly punching above their weight, they're acceptable at under $1,500. That impression really extends to the whole design—it's perfectly serviceable for the price, even if the latter shades from budget into midrange territory. The keyboard is bouncy and comfortable to type on, the touchpad is serviceable, and the chassis doesn't feel weak or flimsy. The visual design, though plain, is clean and neat, and the laptop feels sufficiently substantial. (A sale price at this writing, knocking $250 off our system's $1,449.99 MSRP, makes the Victus more tempting as well.
